Do you use the H5P Framework in your Distance Learning Courses?

The H5P Framework

H5P is an abbreviation for HTML5 Package. H5P allows users to create, share and reuse interactive content. HTML5 is a markup language that, among other things, allows Flash-like interactive content to be created without the need for plugins. It is mobile-friendly and relatively simple to use. The H5P Framework offers an incredible extension for the implementation of the training content.

The framework is embedded natively into Moodle. H5P content can be created in the Content Bank and added to the course as an H5P activity or embedded into other Moodle activities or resources.

H5P is a completely free and open technology, licensed with the MIT license. From the webpage h5p.org demos and downloads are available. This page also offers tutorials and documentation for users who want to use the framework or also to join the community.

Use in Moodle

The developer team of the DISK course (master course in English language) used H5P frequently. The tool offers many opportunities to implement multimedia-based content in various formats.

A special feature are the numerous tools to create appealing questions. The range of the question formats is large. H5P content van be used directly in standard Moodle pages. This feature enriches the look and feel of the presented and available learning and training material.

H5P Course Example

Moodle is the most used learning platform currently. Since the change to version 3.11, H5P is natively integrated into the platform. The standard process to create H5P-based content is to create it in the Content Bank. The created content is reusable and can be used in other courses as well.

H5P content can be inserted at many opportunities: Either in the description text (using this method enables you to show the H5P content directly on the course page), or in pages or even in books. There is almost no restrictions – you may insert more than one H5P activity in a page!

Example from the Self-Evaluations

The course provides the training material but many integrated self-evaluation units as well. Here is an example taken out of the pool of self-evaluations. Test it – and explore this example of multimedia-based content!
