Learning objectives

During this module, trainees will…………..

  • Learn what a Search Engine is.
  • Learn how a Search Engine works.
  • Practice how they can search online libraries and find a book of their own interest.
  • Practice how they can create a Google map with their points of interest and share it with others.
  • Learn & practice how to perform and Advance Searches using Google

Steps

Part 1. Internet Books

Step 1. Browse the recommended databases and choose 3 books that are interesting to you
Step 2. Write an abstract from each of these books.
Step 3. Write down the database that you have used to retrieve the Books.
Step 4. Post the abstract on the participants’ forum.

Part 2. Google Maps & Street View

Step 1. Visit the address  http://www.google.com/mymaps
Step 2 Click on the “Create a New map”
Step 3 . Search for “Ermoupolis  Restaurants“
Step 4. Click on some of them and add them to your map.
Step 5. Add a direction to your map and get step-by-step navigation instructions for that route.
Step 6 Add a point of interest on your map (my house).
Step 7. Change the colour of your map.
Step 8. Add a route then your map.
Step 9. Share the map you have created with your colleagues, by posting the link at the participants’ forum.

Part 3. Advanced Google Search Techniques

Step 1. Search for a large-size image (e.g. for a landscape or object).
Step 2. Find recent news on a topic or public figure.
Step 3. The necessary supporting documents and the procedure for issuing a passport.
Step 4. Statistics on some socio-economic data (e.g. National debt, growth rate, unemployment).
Step 5. List of Local libraries (at least 5).
Step 6. The material in the form of PowerPoint for an object you are interested in (e.g. Battle of Thermopylae, Internet security, etc.).
Step 7. Fill in the standard worksheet provided to you.
Step 8. Submit it to your trainer

  2. Presentation of the uses of Google Maps and Street-View, in order to create your own map and have a virtual tour.
  3. Information on using advanced techniques and alternative search tools.

Activity/Task

Activity 1
Choose 3 books from the recommended databases that are interesting to you, write an abstract from each of these books,  write down the database that you have used to retrieve them, and post the abstract on the participants’ forum.

Activity 2
Visit the Google Maps address, create a New map”, search for “Ermoupolis  Restaurants“, add it to your map, add a direction to your map and get step-by-step navigation instructions to add a point of interest on your map (my house), change the colour of your map, add a route on your map, and post the link at the participants’ forum.

Perform 6 different searches:
